Watch: KNKX All Blues Live Streamed Event with Cary Morin

Parker Miles Blohm

KNKX presented our All Blues live streamed event with singer, songwriter and guitarist Cary Morin on October 2, hosted by John Kessler.   Cary performed songs from his new album, Dockside Saints and chatted with John.

If you missed the event, you can watch it here.

ABOUT CARY MORIN

KNKX All Blues host John Kessler says Cary Morin is “simply one of the best acoustic guitarists you are likely to hear, and a master storyteller as well.” Cary has also been described as a heartfelt songwriter and soulful singer whose music gives us pause to reflect on life’s great rewards, and he’s heralded for his originality, virtuosity and skill. His 2017 album, Cradle to the Grave, was on John’s Top 10 List for the Year in Blues (and won the 2017 Indigenous Music Award for Best Blues CD and the 2017 Independent Music Award for Best Blues CD). Cary’s latest album, Dockside Saints, which was recorded at Dockside Studio in Louisiana, is currently in heavy rotation on All Blues. Cary is a Crow tribal member from Montana and of the new album, he says, “The ancient Native culture of the South has been an inspiration as it relates to our travels and what has become an annual pilgrimage to the Mississippi Valley. This collection of songs represents an annual migration, just as my ancestors migrated from this region to the Western Plains so many centuries ago; sharing culture through music and more along the way. It is the product of our imagination of what was, and what has become our love of the sounds of the South.”

Cary’s astonishing guitar technique, known as “fingerstyle” guitar, with strong qualities of jam, reggae, jazz, blues, bluegrass and dance, involves using all of the fingers of the right hand to create alternating bass and melody figures. Although Cary has no specific mentors on guitar, he cites Leo Kottke as an influence, and says his mastery of the guitar came from many hours of practice on his front porch.

Cary has been a featured performer and teacher at Centrum’s Port Townsend Acoustic Blues Festival. He now makes his home in Northern Colorado, where he has won numerous awards from the Colorado Blues Society. KNKX hosted him for a live studio session in August 2018 and we’re thrilled to welcome him back for another exclusive KNKX performance.  Thanks to The Schack Art Center for their support.
