A long holiday weekend calls for some funky, soulful modern jazz on this week's New Cool. Heat up the grill and groove along with a heaping helping of tasty tunes from the KNKX cooler, including exclusive KNKX studio session performances from The Greyboy Allstars and Polyrhythmics.

Check in next week for a preview of the New Cool-sponsored PBJam Fest at Nectar Lounge in Fremont, featuring Jessica Lurie's legendary band Living Daylights and Skerik in two blistering groups.

If you plan on getting out for live music this weekend, you can't miss with Trombone Shorty and Orleans Avenue at the Neptune Theater on Saturday night, July 6. He's still touring on the strength of his terrific 2017 album Parking Lot Symphony, so you may get a preview of what's next from this firey and funky multi-instrumentalist. Appropriately, you'll hear his tune "Fanfare" to start this weekend's show.

Also that night, two of the area's finest all-star funk bands are in action.

West Seattle's Parliament Tavern presents Episode 19 in their ongoing series West Seattle Soul with a special Friday edition of deep funk grooves from a rotating cast of top players.

The Royal Room welcomes you to Columbia City with the Carlos Overall Express Saturday night. The sax playing brother of friend-of-the-show Kassa Overall, Carlos' band includes Seattle bass icon Evan Flory-Barnes and a pair of veterans of the hip hop group Digable Planets: guitarist Thaddeus Turner and drummer Conrad Real.

Until the grill warms up, enjoy these videos from a pair of sessions you'll hear on the show this week from the Greyboy Allstars and Polyrhythmics. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uawgsXkCRz8
