With one of the area's finest trumpet players acting as mentor, the all-star ensemble from Ballard High School's award-winning jazz program proved that these young musicians belong in any conversation about the northwest's finest teenage jazz bands.
Thomas Marriott, himself a graduate of the acclaimed Garfield High jazz program, told us that he envies the students of today. They have a massive community of fellow musicians to collaborate with and cheer on, which leads to better playing and listening for all.
Seniors Joe Fotheringham (trumpet) and Evan Snoey (tenor sax) are both KNKX School of Jazz guest DJs - Evan's show airs June 6th at 8 p.m. - and told us that jazz musicians can and should work in all styles of music.
Snoey is also a talented fiddle player with extensive experience working in folk music with mentors including David Grisman and Darol Anger. He points out that music of all kinds has origins in bringing people together - it's all "social music."
While pushing to create their own place in the world of jazz, the students of Ballard High know that inspiration can be found across the history of recorded music. KNKX is proud to have this recording of young talents with bright futures.
