Zooming In On Naomi Moon Siegel's 'Shoebox View'

On her debut album as a leader, trombone player, composer and producer Naomi Moon Siegel utilizes the talents of 13 of her musical friends, but live in the KNKX studios, she treated us to an intimate version with her trombone and sparse electric keys alongside guitarist Sean Woolstenhulme's delicate and ethereal playing. The result was a distillation, a close-up, of the beautiful music on "Shoebox View."

The mellow tone of her trombone spoke like a human voice to our studio audience, with accents of chamber jazz and folk music, but each song was a story in Naomi's language. Considering how much traveling she's done, this international language of jazz has served her well. From her teens, beginning with a life-changing trip to play in South Africa, Naomi continues to travel the world (including Costa Rica and The Gambia), mostly as inspiration for composing.

Sadly for her Seattle-area fans, Naomi Moon Siegel's wanderlust has her relocating to Missoula, Mont. If her constant motion results in more music like we heard in the KNKX studios, it's a sacrifice worth making.

Happily, the connections she's forged in the Northwest guarantee, Naomi says, in frequent return visits to blow her horn around Puget Sound. Look for a return to play with the Wayne Horvitz band at the Upstream Festival in Seattle this May.

Abe grew up in Western Washington, a third generation Seattle/Tacoma kid. It was as a student at Pacific Lutheran University that Abe landed his first job at KNKX, editing and producing audio for news stories. It was a Christmas Day shift no one else wanted that gave Abe his first on-air experience which led to overnights, then Saturday afternoons, and started hosting Evening Jazz in 1998.
