Musicians have always passed along their knowledge and experience to the next generation. For some, taking on students is just an additional revenue stream. But for many others, teaching is a serious mission.
We'll hear from a couple of the most dedicated Latin Jazz professors this week on Saturday Jazz Caliente:Rebeca Mauléon has a huge portfolio as a musician, bandleader, composer, producer and educator in the San Francisco Bay Area. She's the author of two essential books on the forms and instrumentation of Latin Jazz and Salsa. She's a professor of Latin American/Afro-Caribbean music as well as jazz/Latin jazz piano and composition at City College of San Francisco. Rebeca has also been a guest lecturer at UC Berkeley and Mills College. Most recently, she's done wonderful things as the Director of Education at SFJAZZ.

Panamanian pianist, composer, educator and social activist Danilo Pérez wasjust announced as a co-leader of GAIA, the Global Association for Interconnective Arts. GAIA is a collaboration of five well-known music programs from around the world: Berklee's Global Jazz Institute in Boston, The School of Jazz and Contemporary Music at the New School in New York, the Conservatorium van Amsterdam, the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique et de Danse de Paris, and the Siena (Italy) Jazz Academy. The stated intent of this group is to implement new ways of educating young musicians. How Danilo will make time for this additional responsibility on top of his other on-going projects is a mystery to me, but it seems like a natural fit for him.
